Martin's Food Basket in Whitefield, NH. Transfers Ownership
Whitefield, NH
- CenterPoint Business Advisors, Inc. is pleased to announce the sale of the Martin's Food Basket of Whitefield, NH on March 20th, 2006. The business was purchased by Mac's Markets of Rutland, VT.
Martin's Food Basket is an established, profitable, grocery store that began as an A&P in 1965. It became Sam's Supermarket in 1975. Then it was purchased by Roger and Lorraine Martin in 1994. They underwent a major expansion in 1998, and have worked hard to continually build their business over the years. After their many years of hard work, they are planning to retire and remain in the picturesque community of Whitefield.
Sherman V. "Mac" Allen, Jr. started his business in 1979 by opening the Fair Haven Truckstop, running it with his wife and children. The station was built on old family farm land, after the Route 4 connector was built.
Mac purchased the local Texaco distributor in 1982, and he quickly became one of the largest gasoline suppliers in northern
New England
. At the same time, his fuel oil business grew to include locations in
Rutland
,
Brandon
,
Cornwall
, and Middlebury.
In 1994 the first "Mac's Convenience Store" was developed on North Main Street in Rutland.Throughout the remainder of the 90's, the chain continued to grow, and there are now 10 company operated "Mac's" gasoline markets, and 10 other stores in NY, NH, and MA that are leased to third party operators.
In December of 1997, the company had the opportunity to purchase "
Walker
's IGA" in
Stowe
,
VT.
The property was originally purchased with the intent to be converted to a drug store, however the company decided to keep the store operating as a grocery store, and the first "Mac's Market" was opened. The company quickly discovered a knack and an interest in the grocery industry. Other stores were added in
Rochester
and
Woodstock
, and more Mac's Market's are being planned for 2006.
Mac's is interested in returning the small, local store to downtown sites and small communities. In a small town, the grocery store is often the heart of the community. It is a place where neighbors meet and friends chat. It is a place to find out what is going on in town and discover the latest local news while doing your weekly shopping. People come here to see a familiar face and a friendly smile as well as look for fresh produce and competitive prices.
To the surprise of many, the company is able to be very price competitive with the large chains by simply pricing fairly every day, and avoiding the big, weekly flyer that has become the calling card of these large chains. Mac's works very hard to buy much of their products locally, in order to support the communities that support them. Each store is different, as is each community. Mac's will continue to employ the current staff at Martin's Food Basket and has several improvements planned for the future.
Michael Coyle and O.J. Robinson of CenterPoint Business Advisors, Inc. represented the Martin's and assisted Mac's Markets in this transfer.
